Classic Myanmar Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Yangon

Tonight you will arrive into Yangon.  Upon arrival you will be metl at Yangon International Airport with welcome flower, welcome drink and there is a red rose honeymoon car waiting to transfer you to your hotel (50 minutes drive). 

Optional: Welcome Dinner with traditional (cultural) show in Karaweik Royal Restaurant. It is built on the lake. Overnight in Yangon. (Dinner)

Day 2:  Yangon (B, L)

Today's sightseeing tour starts to visit by Circular Train from Yaingon Main Rain way station to Inn Sein Station. An continue to Thein Gyi Market (Fresh market). Then you will have lunch in a local restaurant. 

Then visit to Puppet show at Htwe Oo Myanmar Puppet Show place.

You will have a late afternoon visit of the SHWEDAGON PAGODA, one of the world’s most spectacular religious monuments, will conclude the tour of this picturesque Garden City. The golden dome of the Shwedagon Pagoda rises 98 meters above its base and is covered with 60 tons of pure gold. Overnight in Yangon.

Day 3: Yangon – Bagan (B, L)

Today you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Bagan.

Upon arrival in Bagan, transfer to hotel and proceed for sightseeing starting with the busy local market and continuing with visits to a diverse selection of the most important pagodas and temples such as SHWEZIGON PAGODA, built by King Anawrahta in the early 11th century, KU BYAUK GYI, a temple with exquisite murals of Jataka scenes, and ANANDA TEMPLE with four huge standing Buddha images and numerous seated figures in niches around the galleried interior.   You will have lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon Bagan sightseeing by bike.  You will start in town and then you will head out of town and follow the road to Naung Oo (journey would take approximately 1.5 hours).  Upon your return you will board a small local boat in the late afternoon for a sunset cruise on the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River. Overnight in BAGAN.(Breakfast)

Day 4: Bagan – Mount Popa – Bagan (B,L)

This morning you will have the opportunity to see the ancient city of Bagan as it has never been seen before. With ‘BALLOONS OVER BAGAN’ you get a magnificent birds-eye view of thousand year-old pagodas, temples and the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River. The champagne flights at sunrise last just under an hour and take off daily from October through March. The balloon is guided by gentle winds not exceeding 24 km/h. Eight/Six passengers plus a pilot fit into the balloon’s basket.

Then proceed on a scenic overland journey to Mount Popa, an extinct volcano with its shrine dedicated to animist spirits, known as “Nats”. For the energetic, there is time to climb the 777 steps to the shrine at the top of the volcanic plug.   You will have lunch at a great local restaurant. 

This afternoon you will experience sunset by horse cart!  Overnight in Bagan.

Day 5: Bagan (B, L)

This morning start around 9:00am Take a half day cooking class where you will be first taken to the market to buy the ingredients with your teacher.  Then you will head back to the restaurant where you will learn and experience first-hand cooking local cuisine.  Then perhaps the best part will be eating the lunch that you have created.

After Lunch (at a local restaurant), start visit the site of TAYOKEPYAY TEMPLE in Min Nan Thu Village, PHAYA THONE ZU and NANDAMANYA TEMPLES noted for exquisite murals of 13th century and KYAT KAN CAVE monastery, a famous meditation center in Bagan. Visit farming villages around Bagan. Sightseeing continues with an excursion by boat on the Ayeyarwaddy River to the nostalgic NAT HTAUNG KYAUNG, a wooden monastery built in 1781 by a group of monks, famous for woodcarvings, a collection of ancient Buddha statues and lacquer boxes. Overnight in Bagan.

Day 6: Bagan- Mandalay – Amarapura – Mandalay (B, L)

After breakfast, transfer to Airport for the flight to Mandalay.

Upon arrival in Mandalay sightseeing tour start to visit a Myanmar’s cultural capital, Visit MAHAGANDAYON, a famous Buddhist monastery, where more than a thousand monks live and study; continue to the 200-year-old U BEIN teak bridge, built in 1782 at the time when Amarapura was the royal capital. Visit of BAGAYA MONASTERY, with a superb collection of Buddha statues. En route stop at a traditional hand-weaving silk workshop.

Then you will stop for a nice local restaurant for lunch.

Afternoon sightseeing tour including MAHAMUNI PAGODA with its spectacular Buddha image covered with thick layers of gold leaves, visit to Gold Leaf Making Workshop and Tapestry Workshop. SHWE INBIN, one of the most outstanding monasteries in the country, SHWE NAN DAW KYAUNG or GOLDEN PALACE MONASTERY, a superb example of a traditional wooden building and KUTHODAW PAGODA, known as the world’s largest book, consisting of 729 marble slabs engraved with Buddhist scriptures. Sunset on the Mandalay Hill and overnight in Mandalay.

Day 7: Mandalay-Mingun-Ava-Sagaing-Mandalay (B, L)

[Kalaw] After breakfast, transfer to the jetty and board a private chartered boat for a cruise over the Irrawaddy River towards the former capital of Mingun. After a 45-minute cruise, arrive in Mingun, famous for its huge unfinished pagoda also home to the Mingun Bell, considered as the world’s largest uncracked ringing bell. Also visit the beautiful white Hsinbyume Pagoda.   Then you will have a special picnic lunch on the boat.

Excursion to the former royal capital of INWA (AVA), reached by a short boat trip.

Visits by horse-drawn carriage to NANMYINT WATCH TOWER, the remains of the palace building nicknamed "leaning tower of Ava", MAHA AUNGMYE BONZAN MONASTERY, built of brick and stucco and BARGAYAR MONASTERY, famous for its impressive ornate woodcarvings and teak posts. Continue to SAGAING HILLS, a retreat for Buddhist devotees, for sunset. Overnight in Mandalay.

Day 8: Mandalay-Heho-Kalaw (B, L)

Transfer to the airport for the flight to Heho in Shan State.

Continue by car and enjoy a scenic drive to Kalaw.   Start with some trekking through the mountain path, then you will arrive for your picnic lunch.

Afterwards you will see the elephants coming through the river where you will get an opportunity to feed and bath them.  Then you will be able to ride them back to the main camp. 

Then you will be taken to your hotel. 

Located to the west of Inle Lake you will find Kalaw. A small and serene town that offers some of the best trekking trails in the region.

Day 9: Village Trekking – Inn Dein – Inle Lake (B, L)

In morning, continue to Inn Dein Village (by trekking) in the south of the lake by motor boat. From the middle of the lake, continue down a small canal leading to the village of In Dein, a recently opened area in Shan State.   After a walk around the village you will  visit alocal school, where you can interact with the children (NOTE: perhaps we could have you prepare a little English lesson for them, or bring along some supplies that can benefit the school). 

Then you will meet with a local family.  You will visit their home and they will provide a lunch for you. 

Next take the covered stairway to the beautiful Alaung Sitthou area where ancient stupas are partly covered by vegetation. From here there is a magnificent view over the lake. Overnight at Inle Lake.

NOTE:  Depending on time we’ll have to see how much of the following we can also fit in. There are various picturesque hill tribe villages and temples to discover in and around Kalaw. Take for example the Thein Taung Pagoda’s Buddist monastery, a place from which you can enjoy the stunning view of Kalaw at its best. Or the friendly Palaungs people, who mainly live in the Kalaw, Shan State, and belong to the Mon-Khmer.

Day 10: Inle Lake (B, L)

An excursion by boat on Inle Lake will include sights of the famous leg-rowers, typical floating gardens, local methods of fishing and village life. Visit PHAUNGDAW OO PAGODA, the weaving village of INPAWKHON and other sights.

Stop at the Jumping Cat Monastery where you can see the unique cats and their special trick as well as stop for lunch.  NOTE: The monastery will provide lunch as long as their has been a donor earlier in the day, if a donor has not provided there is not a guarantee. 

This afternoon you will transfer to the Red Mountain Winery.  Here you will have a wine tasting and enjoy this unique experience in Myanmar.  Rest and overnight at Inle lake.

Day 11: Inle Lake  ( Heho ) – Onward (B)

After breakfast, transfer to HEHO Airport for your onward flight.
