Classic Cambodia Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Siem Reap (B)

Today you will be met at the airport upon arrival in Siem Reap and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your time of arrival, you may have time this afternoon to embark on an introductory tour of the area including a visit to the local markets.

Day 2: Siem Reap (B, D)

Today you tour begins with a trip out to Bantei Srei. This delightful area has some of the most amazing intricate carvings, especially over the doorways.  Then you will have a break for lunch (you can either have a leisurely lunch out, or if you would like you can go back to your hotel to enjoy the facilities and beat the heat with a dip in the pool!)

Next visit Angkor Thom, the ancient capital city know for it’s smiling faces.

Option: See a Cambodian Circus Show

Day 3: Siem Reap (B)

Option: See sunrise over Angkor Wat!

This morning you will be taken to Ta Prohm, which is the remarkable site where the trees and monastery intertwine in many intriguing ways. After a break during which you may get lunch, you will be taken to Angkor Wat, the main temple area and the best preserved.

In the evening, you will be taken on a sunset cruise on the Great Lake and the Submerged Forest.  Here you will see the floating villages and the local people who live on the river.  (PLEASE NOTE:  This is not a luxury cruise, but rather a chance to see life on the lake and inlets.)

Day 4: Siem Reap - Phnom Penh (B, L)

Today you will take the early morning boat on the Ton Le Sap Lake down the river from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. This is an exciting power boat which seats about 100. This is a rather funky boat, but definitely an Indiana Jones-like adventure. You will go through the Submerged Forest, and the Floating Villages. You will pass many interesting buildings, stilted and pontoon homes, and see a lot of interesting countryside. You will end up on the Mekong River and land in Phnom Penh. There your guide will meet you and take you to lunch. After lunch you will be taken to the King’s Palace and the National Museum.

Evening Option:  Dinner at the FCC (Foreign Correspondent’s Club)

Day 5: Phnom Penh (B, L)

Today you will be taken to two memorials which commemorate the victims of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge.  First we will drive you out to the Killing Fields. This memorial is the site where the Khmer Rouge tortured and slaughtered many, many innocents. They buried them in mass graves, which they made the victims dig for themselves in advance.  Later we will take you back into the city where you will visit the Genocide Museum. This is an old school house which the Khmer Rouge converted into a prison/interrogation center/torture chamber. In addition to the gruesome site of the rooms and torture devices, there are hundreds of photos of the innocent people who were victimized by this evil regime.

Day 6: Phnom Penh (Angkor Borei) (B, L)

Today you will be given a very unique travel experience! We will take you to ancient ruins older than Angkor Wat, which are not being protected. This area is known as Angkor Borei.  There are only scattered ruins (9-10th century) and the ancient city wall is buried in all but a few places.  Still there are some interesting temples and sites.  Your day includes riding a boat across the small lake, riding on the back of cyclos to get to the rural ruins of the city wall and visiting a Cambodian village which rarely sees Westerners.

Day 7: International Flight (B)

Today after breakfast, you will check out of your hotel in Phnom Penh and transfer to the airport for your flight back to the USA.

SHORT ON TIME:

Just focus on Siem Reap to see incredible Angkor Wat for 2-3 nights.

WITH MORE TIME:

Perhaps you might want to take a cooking class in a local restaurant or in a family’s home.  Ride a bike or ATV in the countryside.  Visit far off temples without the crowds.  Or head to the beach in Sikhanoukville or Song Saa Private Island. OR even combine with nearby Thailand or Vietnam.
