Day 3: Ubud - Downhill Bike Ride (B.L)

This morning we’re off on our mountain bikes through the heartland of Bali, travelling downhill on non tourist, secret back roads and minor village roads (with little traffic), experiencing typical Balinese daily life and enjoying the beautiful Balinese countryside to Ubud. We ride through lush forested areas, plantations full of Balinese staples and cash crops (cloves, coffee, cocoa, vanilla, tapioca, taro, local vegetables and exotic tropical fruits), through timeless small villages and lush rice paddy panoramas. And throngs of adorable Balinese children will be there calling out ‘hellos’ and wanting ‘high fives’ on the way down. If we chance upon a ceremony (and we often do) you will be invited to witness the events and our guides will offer explanations.

We show you a Bali other visitors never see and our experienced guides explain this amazing culture and the relationship the Balinese have with their beautiful island.

NOTE:  Bali is famous for their massages and spa treatments.  Any day or night you have the option of utilizing these services.  The hotel services are typically more expensive than the independent businesses.  If you want to add a specific time for you to receive a massage outside of the hotel, we can arrange this.

Day 9:  Beach - Half Day Garuda Wisnu Kencana & Uluwatu Temple   (B, L)

This morning you will have some free time to enjoy the local beaches, visit the local shops or even just hang around your hotel.

This afternoon you will visit the Garuda Wisnu Kencana and the cultural park. Then we will take you to the Uluwatu Temple, which is anarchitectural marvel situated on the edge of a steep 300 foot rock facing the ocean. This temple has some of the most exquisite architecture in Bali and was first built in the eleventh century. There are numerous monkeys on the walkway to the temple, who are delighted to receive food from you. You shouldn’t have anything loose on your clothing or body, such as earrings, pens and glass-cases and you should hold your camera bags tightly. These mischievous monkeys will quickly snatch them and will only give them back for a ransom (typically peanuts and bananas).  Then you will proceed to the temple. This is a small and simple temple, but it is a good introduction to the style and function of the Hindu temples on Bali. Afterwards you can enjoy the sunset while watching the performance of Kechak Dance, which presents the Mahayana story with actors-dancers, beautiful costumes and accompanied totally by the Kechak dancers-singers (no gamelan orchestra).

OPTION: (D) Afterwards we will take you to dinner at a seafood restaurant with tables on the beach.  Though not fancy, the food and ambience are delightful.

Day 11: Beach – Home (B)

NOTE:  If you prefer to move around a bit more you can explore different parts of the island, such as Menjangan in the north where there is good snorkeling, or the East Coast where there is good diving, or more of the interior.   You can also add on some of the other islands such as the wildlife in Borneo or Komodo Island, or perhaps seeing the archeological ruins in Jogyakarta area.  There are so many options in Indonesia!
